Red Mills Champion Unraced - 2011.. as it happened

Great start to the Red Mills last night, and the overall standard of this group of puppies is high. Before racing there were a lot of talking dogs, and word of flashy unrecorded trials was being bandied about like snuff at a wake.

Bulgaden Gypsy - Red Mills Unraced Champion 2011

The first heat, saw the money come for the Lester Power trained Market News, at as lids opened he was best price 4/7. But he had no run to the bend squeezed out of it between dogs, and it was the 2 dog Droopys Cher, that took it up and led all the way. Market news showed a lot of back straight pace and came through for second. The winner looks a very nice bitch, from produce stakes winner Duke Specials first crop. The 3rd bitch home Millbank Sephora has early foot as looks like he would be better from an 2 or 3 box.

The next heat saw the first of two winners on the night for Liam Dwan, in Boherna Hawk, a Westmead Hawk dog that goes back to Minnies Nikita through from the Always on Air. Always on Air is the dam of Barnfield on Air and Boherna Best and the Grand-dam of Thurlesbeg Joker, Boherna on Air and Lenson Joker. This dog ran well from 5 box, leading all the way, and would definitely be better suited being closer to the rails. A November 09 whelp, he has plenty of more scope for improvement.

Heat 3 saw Shergar take the laurels, a son of college causeway, ran well to win by 1.5 L, however, the winning time of 29.97 would suggest that this heat was the weakest of the 6.
Heat four saw one of the talking dogs, Slick Hawk head for the traps the evens favourite. Another Westmead Hawk, in the hands of Pat Buckley this lad looked a class act. Tracking well around the first bend, and easing past the early paced Epic Fantasy approaching the 3rd bend, he ran home very strongly 29.28. He was chased home by Kilara Rocky who lost his footing at the first bend, and checked at 2 and 3, but also looks to be one for the notebooks.

Heat 5 saw the run of the night from the Large Bottles Syndicate owned Bellyard. Ray Melia trained son of Premier Fantasy, from a bitch out of Farloe Oyster, led trap to line in a very impressive 29.14. Hotly fancied Barefoot Machine ran a big race to qualify in 3rd after early trouble, and Locnamon Lad, ran very well in second. Locnamon Lads grand dam Katie King gave us Swords Prince the 2008 runner up in this competition.

The final heat of the night, was again a hot betting heat, the money came early and steadily for Pat Daltons New Boss from his own Express Ego (whose dam Airport Express won this competition in 2001) out of Dark Sienna. But again the favourite backers were nailed as Liam Dwan second winner of the night from previously mentioned Westmead Hawk litter led all the way. A dead set railer, drawn in 1 he showed good foot from the box, and despite taking some paint from the rail on the opening bend he held his ground and led all the way, with New Boss following him home.

That left 24 dogs, and the second round did not disapoint.  There was a great crowd, great racing, and the track ran very well considering the sporadic downpours.

The Red Mills was the first piece of business to grasp the interest, and it was with some disappointment that we two of Sundays winners withdrawn at the bequest of their new owners. The word was of big money moves for Bellyard and Take It There. A positive for breeders in these uncertain times, that if you do have a real good dog, there are still buyers out there.

According to the layers then, that left heat 1 to Martinstown Snow, opening at 4/5. He was heavily backed during the first round, but ran green, but showed enough pace to draw in punters who backed him into 4/6 at the off. But the other 5 dogs didn't read to boards, and it was Gowran Paddy who broke smartest, and got to the bend. Trouble ensued behind, and Paddy led all the way home in 29.44, a good
 run.
Gowran Paddy

Heat 2 gave us the best run of this session of heats from Kilara Rocky, this black dog by Hades Rocket out of Kilara Evelyn (Larkhill Jo -Tyrur Nicola [Top Honcho - Pinhead]) was last to leave the boxes, and despite bumping on the run up and around the first bend, he showed awesome back straight pace to pass every dog in front of him down the back and around the final bends, to get up by half a length from Millbank Sephora, in 29.34. Pat Dalton's New Boss was an unlucky runner as he just couldn't find a gap at the third bend, and misses out on a semi-final place as a result.
Kilara Rocky

Pat Buckley's Slick Hawk, made all in the next one from box 1. He looks a real good railer, and once he broke from Box 1 it was all over. He led down the back, and many would have predicted a procession from there, but John Kiely's Blue Jet Sky, gave chase hard, and finished very strongly to push Slick Hawk to a neck, in 29.29. Blue Jet Sky was two clear at the pickup, and looks one for the notebooks over a stiffer trip in time. Her dam is a half sister to Deanridge Fury and Droopys Mal, and you don't need to go back to far in the dam line to find 2004 Oaks winner Legal Moment.
Slick Hawk

The final quarter final of the Red Mills, saw Boherna Hawk go off at 4/6 jolly. Now running under the name of Martin White (Shropshire), he decided that despite his purchase the dog should stay in the competition. Martin White is the current chairman of the British GOBATA, who has enjoyed success on these shores with Pets Echo a SPK derby runner up, and Back Again, Oaks winner up the hill in Powerstown park [This is open to correction though!]. However, Boherna Hawk was to be undone here by a great run form Droopys Cher, who chased the early paced Bulgaden Gypsy Hard down the back straight, and showed great bravery to take the small inside gap at the third to pass and win. She is a great railer, and its two from two in this stake from her, 2949 this week. Boherna Hawk produced a powerful finish to take second from Bulgaden Gypsy.
Droopys Cher

That now left with 12 very good young dogs to go to traps for Fridays semi-final, and the draw is as follows.
1. DROOPYS CHER
2. MARTINSTOWN SNOW
3. KILARA ROCKY
4. PREMIER RUBY
5. BOHERNA HAWK
6. HYENA HAWK

1. BULGADEN GYPSY
2. MILLBANK SEPHORA
3. TOTOS STAR
4. SLICK HAWK
5. BLUE JET SKY
6. GOWRAN PADDY

Both semi-finals were marred by trouble at the first bend, when dogs seemed to lose their feet very easily on, and the result was a lot a baulking.

The first semi-final went to the Liam Dwan trained and bred Boherna Hawk. A trap to line winner, in a very quick 29.14, adjusted from 29.44 for the going. Boherna Hawk went off the evns favourite and justified it, with a super run. He trapped well and showed great pace from the section clock (4.55) to the bend to lead. Behind him then, all 5 dogs came together which saw sand fly into the air, Drooopys Cher and Premier Ruby turned upside down, and Kilara Rocky badly baulked and left behind Martinstown Snow and Tailteann Queen who gave chase to leader, but 4L was a close as they got.

The key to this heat was the positioning of Martinstown Snow in the 2 box, as for the third week in a row he dived to his right when the lids opened, cutting off the 3 dog, he then rain slightly off the bend when Droopys Cher and Premier Ruby were cutting back in, hence the trouble. This can happen in unraced stakes, as all dogs seem to always carry an inside seed, when in fact there was one definite wide runner, in Martinstown Snow in this heat, and in time he will be a better dog from the five or six box.

The second semi-final saw more drama again, as the top 3 in the betting all went out. The unbeaten Slick Hawk, was the 6/4 jolly, but for the first time he missed the break. It was Millbank Sephora in trap two that led up best, from Toto’s Star in 3 and they led all the way to the back straight. Again there was a splash of sand at the first bend and Gowran Paddy cut in and check the rest of the dogs. Then down the back it was the eventual winner Bulgaden Daisy that showed the most pace, and allied to great bravery to take the rail around the home turn, she was a worthy winner in a slow 29.58, after all the trouble . Slick Hawk got all sorts of trouble at every bend, and can consider himself unlucky. In the final, Bulgaden Daisy will be joined by Toto’s Star, and the locally owned and trained Gowran Paddy who ran a blinder after taking a bump at the first bend.

So, once all the shocks were digested the draw had to be made, and it has thrown together a very interesting final, with the Fav surely to be Boherna Hawk, but he will have the unenviable stripes on his back..

1. TAILTEANN QUEEN
2. GOWRAN PADDY
3. TOTOS STAR
4. BULGADEN GYPSY
5. MARTINSTOWN SNOW
6. BOHERNA HAWK

Leaving with the €5000 first prize was Bulgaden Gypsy (Killahan Phanter / Sovire Peaches). The black bitch left it to finals night to produce here best run to date. From the 4 box, she showed her best foot to the bend so far to lead up in 4.54, and open up a lead of 4 lengths off the second bend as carnage ensued behind her, but we will come back to that. Leading from local hope Gowran Paddy this bitch ran a very strong back straight and stayed on well, to come home the victor in a very nice 29.24 (-.20). This lady is beautifully bred, by Killanhan Phanter, out of an unraced Westmead Hawk bitch from the same ‘Droopys’ dam line that has given us Oran Majestic, and her brother Slick Seattle (formally Soviet Ballistic) is certain to be a top open dog in Shelbourne Park this year.

However, and report on this race cannot be published without mention of the unlucky Boherna Hawk. Drawn in 6, this dog was favourite to take the laurels last night, for his new owner Martin White. Martin bought the dog after his great first round run, and being the great sportsman Martin is, he decided to allow the dog attempt to win the stake before bringing him to England. However disaster struck at first bend, as the Hawk swept through in the outside, only to be bumped slightly by Tailteann Queen, and then the 5 dog Martinstown Snow ran straight off the bend and sent Tailteann Queen and Boherna Hawk tumbling towards the hare rail, which resulted in a career ending injury for Boherna Hawk.

The loss of Boherna Hawk, is surely a loss to racing, as he was a top class dog, who had a lot ahead of him, reflecting on the stake though, he was not the only future star in this stake. From the first round winners, Bellyard and Take It There were both sold, and are ones to keep an eye out for. In the subsequent rounds there were some very eye-catching runs, from the Pat Buckley trained Slick Hawk, the Paul Hennessy pair, Kilara Rocky and Barefoot Machine and Lester Powers Markey News. The runner up Gowran Paddy was gallant in defeat and he should in time turn into a top class prospect over 600yrds and possibly further.
